Inaugural show recognizes junior exhibitors and MO Simmental breeders

Six thousand dollars in premiums are up for grabs during the inaugural Missouri Simmental Association VITAFERM Heifer Xtravaganza at the Missouri State Fair.

Jim Puyear is with Rockin’ P Ranch and an organizer of the show. “We’re going to be able to recognize the junior champions for $1,000, and the consigners of those heifers also get $1,000,” he says.  “The reserves will receive $500.”

He tells Brownfield this is an opportunity to highlight not only the youth exhibitors but also the investment breeders have made to develop some of the best genotypes and phenotypes in the nation. “We needed to find something to get our breeders to bring some better heifers in and get some better consigners in,” he says. “And then we decided to have another contest for somebody that just wanted those heifers for a special class. And we can promote ourselves and pick up better-quality heifers as we go down the road.”

Puyear says the Simmental breed has continued to grow in popularity. “Now is the time for our breed to promote it in any good way and fashion that we can,” he says. “We’re going to be around for a long time. We have good cattle, and people should come out and look at what we’ve done with the Simmental breed. They’ve changed an awful lot in the last 40 years.”

The show takes place Saturday, August 10, immediately following the Missouri State Fair Open Simmental Heifer Show.

The Missouri State Fair kicked off today and runs through August 18, 2024.
