Income tax changes under discussion in Missouri Legislature

Adjustments to Missouri’s state income tax are being considered in the Missouri Legislature this session.

Doyle Justus, the chairman of the Missouri House Ag Committee, tells Brownfield he’s not seen an official plan, but eliminating income tax or other modifications, would likely affect agriculture.

“Farmers that are making income don’t have to pay taxes on that, obviously. We’re going to have to come up with a way to compensate for making up for that loss of revenue. The scuttlebutt going around the capitol is that there’ll be a possible larger sales tax or even a tax on services that we currently don’t have.”

Justus says he wants ag services, like fuel deliveries or help applying crop inputs from the local co-op, to be exempt from any possible new sales taxes.

“I’ve got a good feeling that’s the direction the governor may want to go.”

Justus says he’s expecting income taxes and agriculture to be part of Governor Kehoe’s State of the State address on Tuesday afternoon.
