India shows short and long-term market potential for U.S. corn

The president of the Iowa Corn Growers Association sees short and long-term market potential in India.

Stu Swanson recently visited the country on a trade mission with Iowa’s governor and secretary of agriculture.

“This is a mission that we’re building markets for the future. It probably isn’t going to impact my operation, but it certainly has a huge impact in my children’s and my grandchildren’s going forward.”

He tells Brownfield India does not import genetically modified corn but he’s hopeful strengthening the trade relationship will change that.

“One unique thing that the U.S. has is that India is the third-largest importer of U.S. ethanol, and the ethanol that comes from the U.S. is used for industrial purposes only.”

Swanson says in the near term there’s also an opportunity for India to become a bigger customer of U.S. soybean meal and dried distillers grains for poultry and dairy feed use.
