Indiana agronomist expects strong rebound in corn acres

????????????????????????????????????

A retail sales agronomist based in the Eastern Corn Belt does not expect high input costs to sway a lot of acres this year.

Alex Case with Brevant Seeds says if the weather in southeastern Indiana cooperates, it should be a strong year for corn.

“Last year we were off some corn acres just because of weather conditions and not (being) able to get in the field. But I’d look for us, from my visits with growers and dealers, to be stronger on corn acres again this year.”

He tells Brownfield the soil moisture outlook varies across the region.

“We’re in a pretty good spot right now (but) I’ve got coworkers in northern Indiana that feel like they’re behind on soil moisture right now. And even some of the drought index would suggest that it wouldn’t hurt for them to have some more moisture before they put seed in the ground.”

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows parts of Indiana and Ohio in extreme drought.
