Indiana beef producers see advancement opportunities
The head of the Indiana Beef Cattle Association says May Beef Month is an opportunity to promote Indiana beef and connect farmers with consumers.
Brian Shuter says demand is crucial to producers’ bottom line.
“We think it’s critical to be able to educate consumers about beef, and the nutritious value of beef, why it’s important in their diet, and really focus on things that, as an individual producer, they can’t do themselves,” he said.
He says for every dollar invested in the Beef Checkoff Program, nearly $12 is returned back to the producer.
Shuter tells Brownfield demand for Indiana beef has been strong despite record high prices.
“Consumers are more and more interested in where their food comes from, so if you have the ability to do direct marketing, people buying more and more from their local producer,” he said. “People are starting up smaller meat markets in cities and having success with that. So those are some of the things that we’re seeing success with here in Indiana.”
Shuter says as long as demand holds, there is room for market prices to move higher.
