Indiana declares disaster emergency after historic flooding damages crops and communities

Indiana Governor Mike Braun has declared a disaster emergency due to historic flooding, tornado, and derecho activity across the state.

He says the Indiana Department of Homeland Security will disperse funds for impacted communities under the state’s Disaster Relief Fund program.

On Friday, Braun requested a Presidential Emergency Declaration through FEMA to bring additional federal resources to Indiana to support emergency response costs.

Local disaster declarations have also been made in several parts of Indiana, including Carroll, Dearborn, Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Hamilton, Henry, Lake, Madison, Marion, Porter, Pulaski, Putnam, Tipton, Wayne counties, and in the municipalities of Attica, Flora, Carmel, Noblesville, and New Chicago. 

Parts of the state have received up to 12 inches of rain since August 11th, leaving many fields flooded and creating long-term concerns about crop losses. 

The order is in effect for 30 days.
