Indiana Department of Ag expanding soil conservation efforts
The Indiana State Department of Agriculture is emphasizing the importance of soil testing.
Director Don Lamb says it’s critical to nutrient management.
“It’s a cost saving measure,” he says. “It can be a yield enhancement if you have areas that aren’t getting enough nutrients. It can also be a benefit to the environment.”
He tells Brownfield Indiana farmers remain committed to expanding conservation efforts and are implementing new practices each year.
“Anytime you can cut back nutrients that are added to the soil, there’s a smaller chance of that those nutrients getting into the waterways. Farmers do a lot of good things with soil conservation when it comes to practices that keep soil erosion from happening.”
The department is currently offering free soil sampling for Indiana producers through October 17th. For more information, farmers can sign-up online or contact [email protected].
