Indiana FFA tackling food insecurity with statewide Days of Service project

More than 200 Indiana FFA members from across the state are helping fight food insecurity as a part of this year’s Indiana FFA Days of Service.
“Our job as FFA members is to serve others, and this is a great way to do that,” she says.
Lauren Happel of the Hamilton Heights FFA Chapter and District 5 treasurer says service projects help bring chapters closer to their local communities.
“This year’s community service project is packing meals for those who need them most,” she says. “I’m most excited about getting to work alongside people who I get to meet for the first time and meet a common goal.”
Molly Adams with the Million Meal Movement says students have a goal of packing 40,000 meals to help families meet nutrition gaps.
“They’re packing a mac and cheese meal,” she says. “It is fortified with extra Vitamin D and calcium. A lot of kids are actually calcium deficient. There are 6 serving bags, so they easily feed a family. People don’t realize that when you’re food insecure, you may not have milk and butter readily available, so they’ll be able to cook it with just water.”
The Million Meal Movement has been partnering with the Indiana FFA Organization for the last three years to help fight hunger across the state through meal-packing events that provide nutritious food to families in need.
