Indiana governor creates Make Indiana Healthy Again Initiative

Indiana Governor Mike Braun says Indiana farmers are part of the solution for the Make Indiana Healthy Again initiative.

Braun says an overhaul of the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will reduce spending on unhealthy foods.

“Indiana Farms grow world class nutritious food. Today, we’re making it easier to buy direct to consumer food from local Indiana farms. We’re focused on root causes, transparent information, and real results.”

Alongside Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr, the governor announced he has submitted a waiver that wouldn’t allow soft drinks and candy to be purchased using SNAP funds. Braun says a significant portion of federal SNAP dollars are used to purchase soft drinks and unhealthy snacks.

Secretary Kennedy says he wants to see more states take similar action.

“I encourage governors all over the country to follow the lead of Indiana and to file with Brooke Rollins the application for a SNAP waiver.”

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz was also present for the announcement.
