The executive director of Indiana Pork says the organization is focused on ensuring regulatory burdens don’t limit growth opportunities for the state’s pork producers in 2026.

Josh Trenary says the group will be monitoring new labeling requirements that could create additional challenges for farmers.

“If the USDA has approved something, or if the FDA has approved something, then that’s a tool that’s available in the producers toolbox and shouldn’t have to be segmented out to differentiate it from any other type of product,” he says.

He tells Brownfield it’s also important for consumers to understand the product they’re buying.

“We want to connect the consumer to local producers to make sure that we’re strengthening those connections,” he says. “Locally produced food isn’t going to take the place of the food system generally, it’s just a nice option.”

Trenary says creating clear policies that help expand market access across the state will be key to ensuring the long-term success of the pork industry.
