Indiana Poultry Association makes annual Statehouse presentation

The head of the Indiana State Poultry Association says its 76th Annual Poultry Presentation recognizes the contributions growers make throughout the year to fight food insecurity.

Becky Joniskan tells Brownfield, “Two eggs a day is adequate protein for a child, so we really try to make sure we get those protein-rich foods into our food banks.”

In 2023, producers donated 200,000 pounds of duck, turkey and chicken, 172,000 dozen eggs and $340,000 to Hoosier feeding programs.

Joniskan tells Brownfield growers are very thankful the state has been able to avoid highly pathogenic avian influenza this season.

“We are on our highest level of biosecurity and alert,” she shares.  “This disease is spread by wild waterfowl, and it just does not discriminate.”

Indiana leads the nation in duck production and ranks as the second-largest producer of egg-laying chickens, eggs, and fourth for turkey.
