Indiana poultry producers donate 250,000 pounds of poultry to those in need
Indiana poultry producers donated more than 250,000 pounds to help address food insecurity across the state.
ISDA director Don Lamb says this is the 77th annual Governor’s Poultry Presentation at the Statehouse.
“There’s eleven food banks the state department of agriculture supports in that system,” he says. “There’s all sorts of pantries and ways to get it from those food banks out into communities. Getting that food from the food banks and into the hands of those that need it, it takes different forms.”
Indiana State Poultry Association president Becky Joniskan shared how important this tradition is to the state’s poultry producers and consumers.
Lamb tells Brownfield Indiana is one of the nation’s top poultry producers.
“We’re number one in duck production,” he says. “As far as an agricultural industry that’s important really across the state, poultry is so important. You’ve got to be impressed with that from an economic development standpoint.”
Chicken producers donated one million dozen eggs and duck producers donated over 50,000 dozen eggs this year. Beyond the donation of poultry and eggs, poultry companies also provided a $120,000 donation to various charitable organizations across the state.
