Indiana property tax relief bill nears the finish line

The executive director of public policy for Indiana Farm Bureau says farmers will see property tax relief over the next few years.
Andy Tauer says an amended version of Senate Bill 1 passed out of the Indiana House.
“This bill looks significantly different than it did when it left the Senate back in late February,” he says. “They did move the capitalization rate for the farmland formula up from 8% to 9%.”
He tells Brownfield the legislation wasn’t what Indiana ag groups hoped for, but farmers will still get some much needed relief.
“That capitalization rate expires or sunsets after two years, but that gives us an opportunity to come back and talk about farmland taxes for the 2027 budget cycle,” he says. “A year from now, we’ll see a little bit of relief in year one and then again in year two.”
The bill is expected to head to the governor’s desk for signature this week.
