Industry anxiously awaiting September WASDE

A hedging strategist with AgMarket.net says the industry is anxiously awaiting the next USDA supply and demand report.

Sam Trainor says all eyes will be on the corn yield estimates.

“We’re starting to see some of these crop tours come in below that USDA estimate of 188.8.”  He says, “Most estimates are expecting them to drop that yield down a little bit here as we go into harvest.”

He tells Brownfield a positive September report could bring opportunities.

“Potentially make some better cash sales, or at least use some re-ownership strategies with options, and that sort of thing to improve some sales that have already been made,” he says.

Trainor says producers may also want to consider locking in basis prices ahead of harvest where possible.

“With a big crop, I think you’re going to get into a situation where these elevators aren’t going to want the bushels, and they’re either going to force you to sell, or they’re not going to take it.”  He says, “The basis levels in situations like that can get pretty ugly.”

The USDA’s next supply and demand report is released on Friday, September 12th.

Brownfield spoke with Trainor at the 2025 Farm Progress Show.
