International trade and food security opportunities on display in D.C.

The Director of Ohio’s Department of Agriculture says collaboration with North American countries will help address food security and provide more trade opportunities for farmers.

Brian Baldridge says officials from the United States, Canada, and Mexico, who participated in last week’s Tri-National Agriculture Accord, agree there is a need for fair and balanced trade.

“When it comes to our markets in the agricultural community, we care about those opportunities to sell our products all across the world,” he says. “Our producers have an opportunity to get the most out of their product, because if there’s not a demand for that product, our commodities feel that pressure.”

He tells Brownfield that Ohio agriculture is recognized on a national scale.

“Here in our state, food and ag is a $124 billion industry,” but but” he says. “We lifted that message up and our message was how important dairy, poultry, swine, beef cattle, and our main commodities really are.”

The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture hosted the Mexican Embassy, Canadian ag ministers, and 18 ag directors, secretaries, and commissioners from across the United States for the event.
