Investing in the aquaculture industry

The executive director of the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health says aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food production systems in the world.

Gena Perry says it’s an opportunity for farmers to increase demand for U.S. soy.

“It’s expanding at nearly twice the global average, and it’s reaching up to 23% in some regions,” she says. “We also see that aquatic foods, aquaculture provides more than 3 billion people with at least 20% of their average per capita animal protein intake.”

American Soybean Association board member Morey Hill says as the aquaculture industry has increased it’s use of U.S. soy, there’s been increased efficiency.

“With soy meal as the main ingredient for fish pellets, it floats,” he says. “They have a better rate of game and also because of that they get to market sooner, they have less waste and less disease.”

Perry and Hill recently spoke during a recent webinar.

WISHH is operated by the American Soybean Association and works to promote food security through the development of new markets for U.S. soy.
