Iowa Ag Secretary expects market disruption from retaliatory tariffs
Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture warns farmers to brace for the impact of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. ag exports.
Mike Naig tells Brownfield Canada has already retaliated and Mexico is expected to.
“Factually, we expect that there will be or we should expect a disruption. Time will tell how much of a disruption, of course. We certainly hope that the tariffs that have been announced are short-lived.”
He says the tariffs imposed by President Trump are intended to level the playing field on trade.
“We’re an agriculture production country. The President has clearly outlined that he wants to re-shore manufacturing and innovation and RND, and that would be good for the U.S. economy. I just don’t want to see agriculture become collateral damage in that effort.”
Naig says Canada and Mexico are the top two importers of Iowa ag products.
