Iowa Cattlemen focused on building next generation of beef industry leaders

The CEO of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association says the Iowa State Fair provides a valuable opportunity to connect with the next generation of cattle producers.

Bryan Whaley says launching a cattle operation can be difficult.

“If you want to go out and try to buy bred heifers or bred cows, the cost of those to do that at a significant level, you better have some capital,” Whaley said.

He tells Brownfield the industry could do a better job of helping young producers find a pathway into the business.

“We’ve got to find ways to get them connected,” Whaley said. “Maybe with some of those individuals who have operations that are thinking about retirement in 10 years and maybe don’t have anyone to turn it over to or maybe their kids or their next generation doesn’t want to take it over.”

Whaley says beginning farmer loan programs also need to be more accessible.

“How do we change up some of the rules and regulations that go with those? That’s going to be a key thing,” he said.

Whaley says maintaining a strong pipeline of young people interested in the beef industry is critical, especially as the number of cattle producers continues to decline and the average age rises.

He spoke to Brownfield on Tuesday at the 2026 Iowa State Fair:
