Iowa cow-calf producer tackles cold conditions, praises strong market

A southwest Iowa cow-calf producer says he’s been working hard to help protect his livestock from cold weather.

Jeff Jorgenson from Fremont County says it’s been a bitter cold start to the month. “More feed is what it boils down to when you really lose that temperature. We try to make sure we have some wind break or protection in that regard for cows.”

Weather challenges aside, he tells Brownfield his operation has been strong the last few years. “The cattle industry is expensive. There’s no doubt about it right now, but it’s been a good enterprise for us obviously as of late with pretty strong pricing.”

Jorgenson says low cow numbers across the country have helped boost prices for producers.
