Iowa crops maturing slightly behind average

It was another mostly dry week across Iowa.

Iowa Ag Secretary Mike Naig responded to USDA’s latest crop update by saying while areas of northern Iowa received some scattered showers, conditions were favorable for fieldwork.

Corn at dent stage or beyond reached 74 percent, six days behind last year and two days behind the five-year average.

Soybeans coloring or beyond reached 42 percent, four days slower than a year ago but just one day off the usual pace.

The third cutting of alfalfa is 93 percent done, which is a week ahead of normal.
