Iowa delegation returns from ag trade mission to Colombia

U.S. beef and pork exports have been on the rise to Colombia.

Grant Menke, Deputy Secretary with the Iowa Department of Agriculture, says that was confirmed during a recent trade mission to the country. “We were able to see U.S. beef and pork promoted and sold in grocery stores in meat markets, in restaurants, and it was exciting to see the ways in which those products were promoted and utilized.”

He tells Brownfield Colombia has become a top 10 export destination for Iowa pork and beef. “We’ve seen over a 400% growth in pork exports from the United States to Colombia and over 900% growth in beef exports to Colombia. Pork is still higher in volume, but beef is growing substantially as well.”

Menke says with a population of 52 million people, Colombia shows promising opportunities for import growth across most ag sectors.

The trade mission was coordinated by the Iowa Economic Development Authority.
