Iowa farmer controlling weeds in conventional and organic systems

A north Iowa farmer who grows conventional and organic crops is splitting time between planting and controlling weeds.

Rusty Olson of Garner says management differs a lot between the two systems.

“Conventional, I guess I kind of call that my easy farming. I love everything we do in the organic world, but man is it fun to jump in that 4930 John Deere sprayer and go spray the pre at 19 miles per hour on RTK. It’s easy and fast.”

He tells Brownfield there are several weed management tools he uses for organic.

“With the weed zapper and the flamer and the high-speed management tools, we’re running 60-foot cultivators and we’ve just learned to do really a pretty good job with staying ahead of it.”

Olson says with organic crop farming he’s constantly learning.
