Iowa farmer finding success with strip-till

A central Iowa farmer is finding success doing less tillage.

Corey Hillebo of Polk City says he switched to strip-till a few years ago.

“I see strip-till as a leverage of my time and logistics that I can do the seed bed prep when I’m not trying to field cultivate, spray, plant, and tend all of those things.”

He tells Brownfield strip-till has enabled him to cut back on crop inputs and fits well with carbon reduction strategies.

“Looks like strip-till, no-till, and cover crops are all going to be kind of a requirement, so we’re already ahead of the game. I do like where we’re sitting right now.”

Hillebo says farmers considering strip-till should be aware the change in equipment can be expensive.
