Iowa farmer gets more aggressive on weeds

A north Iowa farmer plans to be more aggressive managing weeds this year.

Casey Schlichting of Clear Lake says there won’t be dramatic changes to his herbicide program.

“Going a little bit hotter on pre’s on beans. I have a couple problem fields that need a little more than they usually get, so we’re going to hit them a little heavier this spring and hopefully it holds a little bit longer (and) we get timely rains (because) it helps that chemical out.”

He tells Brownfield late-season waterhemp has been a problem in some of his soybeans.

“Tried to smoke them down a couple years ago with Cobra and just really messed up yields in the long run, so trying to get ahead of them.”

Schlichting says the crop protection tool he might scale back on this year is fungicide.
