Iowa farmer optimistic about his 2024 crop
A western Iowa farmer says the 2024 growing season has been better than expected.
Kelly Garrett raises corn, soybeans, and winter wheat in Crawford County. “The corn planted before April 25th looks perfect,” he said. “There are a few weak spots. In those side hills, the wet spots can show up and they have. But if those wet spots don’t show up, I don’t think we have enough rain. It’s okay that they are there.”
Speaking to Brownfield at the 2024 Ag PhD Field Day near Sioux Falls, South Dakota,he said disease and pest pressure has been minimal. “Tar spot was found not too far away very early, but for some reason it hasn’t progressed.”
Garrett says he plans to apply more fungicide in the next few weeks.
