Iowa farmer preps for winter calving season

An eastern Iowa farmer says he’s gearing up for the winter calving season.

“In about 10 day is our first due date,” said Lance Lillibridge of Vinton.

Lillibridge says frigid temperatures are always the biggest challenge. “It’s probably going to be cold and miserable since we’ve had such a pleasant fall and beginning of winter. I’m expecting the worst.”

He tells Brownfield he always takes extra steps to get cattle prepared. “Just getting in front of those cows and getting them inside when they are ready. We’ll make sure that calf is up and moving, cleaned off, and warmed up before it gets back outside. We’ve had pretty good luck calving, even in 20-below weather.”

Lillibridge raises red angus cattle in Benton County.
