A southwest Iowa farmer says he plans to start raising a third crop this year.

Mark Peterson farms near Stanton in Montgomery County and says, “I would have to say that pretty well in my mind I know it’s something we need to do. Probably the easiest one for us to adapt in would be oats.”

He tells Brownfield an oat crop could be profitable. “It’s a good thing from a standpoint you can make more uses of some of your resources like a combine and things like that for a third crop, but it does add another layer labor in there that maybe we don’t have readily available.”

Peterson says he’s currently in a corn and soybean rotation on 500 acres along with some cereal rye cover crops.
