Iowa farmer sees yield loss after scaling back fungicide use

A farmer from western Iowa says he pulled back on fungicide purchases this year and is starting to see the results at harvest.

Kevin Ross says corn yields have been a mixed bag.

“Corn we’ve done so far is not real great. Had some green snap in it early,”

He tells Brownfield yields are lower in non-fungicide fields.

“Consequently, chose not to spend the dollars on the fungicide just from economic factors. Man, the differences in yield from fungicide applications and non-fungicide applications there’s significant differences.”

Ross says he’s hopeful the rest of his corn acres will produce better yields than he’s seen so far.

“Definitely not the best corn that I’ve combined, but I think we’ve got a lot better stuff out there yet to go and hopefully we find some of that after we get the rest of these beans wrapped up.”

Ross farms near Minden in Pottawattamie County.
