Iowa grower counts cost of hauling corn amid diesel increase
Escalating fuel prices are being felt on farms across the U.S.
North Iowa farmer Casey Schlichting says the cost of hauling corn is going up.
“$4.25, $4.35 corn and you put $375 in the semi to get that done. That was a little disheartening.”
The national average diesel price has risen around $1 per gallon since the conflict in the Middle East began.
He tells Brownfield his fuel expenses could’ve been worse.
“When I was on vacation in February my fuel guy called me and said it might not be a bad time to fill everything up, and I said ‘well go ahead and do it.’ I mean, I didn’t know and he didn’t know that we were going to have an issue with Iran, but that turned out to be a good move on my part.”
Schlichting grows corn and soybeans near Clear Lake.
