Iowa House Speaker praises carbon pipeline legislation

Iowa House Speaker Pat Grassley says he’s optimistic Governor Kim Reynolds will sign a bill into law that puts new restrictions on carbon pipelines.

“I have not had an opportunity to have a conversation with the governor at this point in time,” Grassley said. “…I’ve already signed it, sent it over to the senate and I’d be hopeful and my expectation would be that the governor would sign that piece of policy that finally does give some certainty to landowners.”

The Iowa House had passed some carbon pipeline-related legislation in recent years, but it never received votes in the state senate until this legislative session, and Grassley says, “We think it achieves the mission we’ve been on for several years now. I think it’s something we would have a high expectation of the governor to sign.”

Farm groups like the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association and Iowa Corn Growers Association say the bill would essentially ban pipelines in the state.

Governor Reynolds has the power to either sign or veto the pipeline bill.
