Iowa State Fair CEO retiring

One of the most popular state fairs in the country will be under new leadership next year.

Gary Slater tells Brownfield he’s retiring as CEO of the Iowa State Fair after 21 years.

“When you get to a point where you’re comfortable with leaving the fair better than you found it, and in a solid position to even go farther and to higher heights than I took it, then you kind of know it’s time to do that.”

He says attendance was consistently in the mid 900,000’s when he took over the Iowa State Fair.

“And I think I had been here five or six years the first time we went over 1 million. Now consistently we’re going over 1.1 million (and) marketing has been a big key.”

Slater says the job opening is posted and the Iowa State Fair Board of Directors should have a new CEO in place by the beginning of 2023.
