Iowa will require H5N1 testing of lactating show cows

Iowa will require lactating dairy cows to be tested for the H5N1 virus before they can be taken to fairs and exhibitions.

Ag Secretary Mike Naig issued the order Tuesday requiring Iowa dairy exhibitors to have a completed negative HPAI test within seven days of the exhibition starting Monday, July 1st.  The order is like orders that are already in place for Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Naig says Iowans should expect additional challenges as the situation continues to evolve, and the agency will continue to evaluate its response to H5N1.  He says the department will continue to support farmers through the joint state and federal response team navigating this “evolving and unpredictable situation.”

The Iowa order will remain in place until further notice.
