IRFA asks Congress to prioritize E15 fix in early 2025

The executive director of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association says he’s hopeful a federal solution for year-round E15 will be prioritized in early 2025.

Monte Shaw tells Brownfield legislation has stalled in Congress. “It’s being blocked by one senator who has a refiner in his backyard and he’s just not going to let it go through. That senator is going to retire at the end of this year. We are hopeful that will provide an opportunity to fix this once and for all nationwide.”

He says a yearly summer waiver from the U.S. EPA isn’t sustainable long-term. “It’s not something that they can just decide to do. If the data doesn’t justify it, and an administration tried to do it, they would probably be very vulnerable to a lawsuit. So thinking that’s just going to keep happening year after year is not the way.”

Shaw says some petroleum fuel retailers have supported a legislative fix.
