Jay County presents “Tour de Farm 2013”
Jay County Farm Bureau held their first annual Tour De Farm last week. Jay County Farm Bureau president Dave Lowe says the goal of the program was to go on the offense and start a conversation about the importance of agriculture to the county. “We thought if we could to elected officials (state and local), business leaders, and people in the county, our first thought was we can reach more people because these guys make decisions every day,” he says.

Jody McKee is a teacher at General Shanks Elementary School in Portland, Ind. She tells Brownfield agriculture is an important component of the county. “Jay County is a rural area and a lot of people make their living through farming or some sort of agribusiness,” she says. “So it’s important for all our children, even if they don’t live on a farm, to know about the farms of Jay County.”
She says she can incorporate some of the things learned into her lesson plans. “I teach 3rd grade and part of 3rd grade is Jay County history so we do a lot of what happens here in the county,” she says. “We also do a farm unit where I teach and I’ll bring some of what I’ve learned into those lessons.”

Approximately 50 people took part in the first annual Tour De Farm this year – the group was a mix of educators, elected officials, and local stakeholders.
