Johnson House Ag Committee priorities are nutrition, farm bill implementation

South Dakota Republican Congressman Dusty Johnson says one of two priorities on the House Agriculture Committee is implementation of what he calls “a good farm bill.”

“I think there’s a sense of good feeling throughout the House about that bill,” Johnson told reporters Thursday, “but I just don’t think we can declare victory and go home.”

Johnson, a freshman lawmaker, was just named Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Nutrition, Oversight and Department Operations. He said farm bill implementation will take a lot of committee time, but he said there’s another priority.

“I’m also going to take a personal interest in nutrition, whether that’s food stamps or the other programs, in the jurisdiction of that committee,” said Johnson. “It’s something that I really care about.”

Johnson says he wants to have an impact on reforming and right-sizing welfare programs so “they really work for families.”
