June rains bringing optimism for northern Illinois crops
A northwestern Illinois farmer says his 2026 crops are off to a good start.
Jon Rosenstiel, who raises corn, soybeans, alfalfa, and cattle in Stephenson County, tells Brownfield, “We were dry and warm early in the season, so we got our crops in, and most everything went in fine shape.” He says, “Stands are good, both corn and soybeans.”
He says he didn’t have to replant any acres, and the recent rains have been welcome.
“The month of May was very dry for us, but recently now we got to June, and we’ve been getting some moisture, so we’re in fine shape coming into the 4th here,” he says.
Statewide, the USDA says 60% of the corn crop is in good to excellent condition, with 96% emerged and 1% silking, while 58% of soybeans are in good shape with 93% emerged and 3% blooming. The Illinois winter wheat crop is rated 79% in good to excellent condition with 41% harvested.
