Kansas City Fed shows ongoing financial challenges expected for crop producers
A senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City says agricultural credit conditions continue to tighten for many row crop producers.
Ty Kreitman says many producers are still facing economic headwinds.
“We’re coming off of year three of very tight margins,” he says. “2027 will be year four. It looks like things are going to remain tight. The commodity markets are going to be a key factor in determining the trends in the next few months.”
But, he tells Brownfield several factors have helped ease the rate of deterioration in the ag economy.
“We saw the decline pace slowed from previous quarters,” he says. “We saw a slight increase in crop prices. We saw the distribution of the Farmer Bridge Assistance Program payments. I think we’re seeing the some of these things show up in net farm income.”
Kreitman says more than half of the lenders surveyed report weaker financial conditions for smaller operations.
