Kansas farmer says corn crop is off and running
A western Kansas farmer says his corn crop is off to a good start due to timely rains and warmer weather.
Clay Schemm farms near Sharon Springs. “It’s got a really good set up right now. We were able to get out there and get the weeds under control and get the corn in the ground. It’s coming up really good and now we’re trying to keep weeds under control.
The USDA says 91 percent of the crop has been planted with 77 percent emerged, and 66 percent is rated good-to-excellent.
As for the winter wheat crop, Schemm tells Brownfield, “Overall, for guys in the area, the wheat that is still continuing through to harvest is still looking decent. We’re going to see probably even to a little decline in wheat acres.”
Winter wheat condition is rated 51 percent good-to-excellent, and 97 percent of the crop has headed.
Soybeans are 65 percent planted with 44 percent emerged, and 72 percent is rated good-to-excellent.
