Kansas farmer says sorghum harvest, wheat planting going well

The owner of a southwest Kansas farm says sorghum harvest is complete, and winter wheat is being planted.

Alan VanNahmen tells Brownfield…

“The sorghum crop is good. We’ve had that real nice fall weather for fall harvest on sorghum.”

According to USDA, sorghum is 87% harvested in Kansas, with 40% of the crop rated good to excellent.

VanNahmen says two heavy rainstorms helped his sorghum crop, but also washed off some of the herbicides.

“Some of those fields are pretty weedy in spots,” he says.

But he says there’s good subsoil moisture for winter wheat.

“I’d say our wheat is coming up pretty nice. Dust was blowing while we were running drills across the field, but down there an inch or two in the ground, there’s pretty nice moistures from the rains that we had around our area,” he says.

According to USDA, winter wheat in Kansas is 68% planted with 36% of the crop emerged.

Elsewhere, corn in Kansas is 77% harvested, compared to 67% last week, and ahead of the five-year average of 64%, with 98% mature and 42% rated good to excellent.

Soybeans are 53% harvested, compared to 30% last week and well ahead of the five-year average of 37%.
