Kansas farmer says timely rains have helped crops

A farmer in north central Kansas says his corn and soybean crops are off to one of the best starts he’s ever seen.

Shale Porter tells Brownfield emergence is excellent and ponding water hasn’t been an issue. “Our rains we wouldn’t get very large amounts at a time. Maybe an inch or inch and a half at a time. The ground was able to absorb that really well. It was very isolated if there were any issues like that.”

He says weed and disease pressures have been minimal. “Everything is pretty clean. The rain has activated all of the herbicides and our pre-herbicides and they’re doing a good job holding everything out so far.”

Porter says he expects to raise a 50-60 bushel wheat this year, which could be a record crop.
