Kansas growers hoping for replenished soils from weekend blizzard

A pair of central Kansas crop growers are hopeful snowfall from a weekend blizzard can help replenish soil moisture levels.

Paul Penner says much of the region is still being impacted by moderate drought.

“I’m very grateful that we’ve got this moisture here. The ice and snow kind of covers the wheat right now and prevents it from suffering the effects of winter kill,” he says.

Doyle Jost tells Brownfield he’s not as certain the recent snow will make much of a difference.

“There’s places that the ground’s almost bare and places that it’s pretty deep. It just kind of depends how the wind hit it,” he says.

Jost estimates about eight inches of snow fell on his farm. Both farmers grow wheat, corn and soybeans in Marion County.
