Kansas weather could impact top-end yield

A central Kansas farmer says weather extremes may have impacted his crops yield potential this year.

Rick Schlender says hail impacted his corn, soybeans and wheat. “Some areas had some fairly major damage, but the majority of it looks good. They’ve responded since those hail storms, and I think we’ll be alright.

He says it was extremely dry earlier this year, and then the weather pattern changed dramatically. “Too much rain in some areas. Other areas have had the right amount, but we’re sitting pretty good. We got through wheat harvest fairly dry.”

He tells Brownfield harvest was smooth. “The quality was fairly good. We had some disease issues with wheat streak. That hurt test weights and quality. Yield wise, some of it was better than we expected, but there were some disappointments out there, too.”

The USDA says 72 percent of the state’s crop has been harvest. Corn condition is rated 66 percent good-to-excellent, and soybeans are rated 68 percent good-to-excellent.
