Keeping the farm bill at the forefront of the conversation

The National Farmers Union wants to ensure Congress is committed to finishing a farm bill this year.
President Rob Larew says the organization remains focused on getting a new a five-year farm bill across the finish line this year.
“We want to drive home the fact that safety net right now is not quite adequate,” he says. “We need strong crop insurance. We need to make sure that those programs helping commodities are as strong as possible.”
But, he tells Brownfield he doesn’t think it will get done within the first 100 days of the new administration.
“We understand that there are a lot of competing priorities in Congress this year,” he says. “We can’t let the needs of rural America and farmers and ranchers go astray.”
Larew says the organization is focused on helping farmers be more productive and profitable.
Brownfield interviewed Larew at the 2025 Indiana Farmers Union Annual Meeting.
