Know what threats are in your fields

There are countless pesticide options and tank mix combinations for agronomic use, so how do growers find what is best?

Agronomist Jonathan Perkins tells Brownfield the best way to narrow down which herbicides, fungicides and insecticides to use is to know what threats are in your fields specifically.

“If we don’t know what we are trying to control and we are just spit balling recommendations we aren’t doing it justice. There’s a lot that’s out here, but just now your weed spectrum, try to control things before they get out of hand, and use a pre-emerge as a systems approach so we don’t have a jungle to try and control.”

Fellow agronomist Jon Skinner says many Midwest fields are approaching corn tasseling and R3 soybeans which he says are critical time points for high yield management.

“I would encourage farmers to get out and scout their fields , see what is out there from a disease standpoint so we can make proper applications if they need a fungicide or need an insecticide to help preserve some of the yield that is out there.”

And if you need guidance, Perkins says local agronomists and co-ops are there to help. Brownfield interviewed Perkins and Skinner at Beck’s Effingham, Illinois location during their Herbicide Insight Day Wednesday.
