Lactose Free, A Growing Market

Consumers are starting to see more lactose free products available in the dairy aisle.

According to the National Library of Medicine, 68 percent of the world’s population has lactose malabsorption – a reduced ability to digest lactose.

Chris Hackman, COO of Prairie Farms tells Brownfield they want to make sure everybody, regardless of their lactose intolerance, to enjoy milk.

Hackman says there’s no change in the amount of milk or how it’s processed to make the products lactose-free.

“We are able to actually treat it with an enzyme that gets rid of the lactose in the milk so we have all the good nutrition, all the good vitamins and everything that’s in milk.”

Some of the current lactose-free products include cottage cheese, sour cream and milk.

Stangler recently interviewed Hackman during a June Dairy Month event at Central Dairy in Jefferson City, Missouri.
