Late disease impacting corn crop
An Illinois agronomist says late disease is impacting the corn crop.
David Kleinschmidt, owner of Progressive Agronomy Consulting, tells Brownfield…
“Tar spot kind of came in late even after guys had sprayed some fungicide.” He says, “I’ve started to find some Goss’s wilt out in places as well, and the southern part of the area is starting to see some southern rust.”
He says farmers need to scout the standability of their fields.
“Determining what fields need to be harvested earlier.” He says, “Also going back and readdressing what hybrids we planted where and looking at some of the tolerances for different diseases, and stalk strength, and everything, and make sure that it’s all going to stand there for you.”
Kleinschmidt says he doesn’t expect the diseases to have major yield impacts due to their late arrival. He says early harvest results in south central Illinois have been variable.
