Lawmakers urge intervention amid potential Colombian investigation of U.S. corn subsidies
A bipartisan group of lawmakers is pushing the Biden administration to step in amid reports Colombia could launch an investigation into U.S. corn subsidies.
In a letter to Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack and US Trade Representative Katherine Tai, the 39 members of Congress said maintaining market access is critical to farmers as Colombia ranks among the top five export markets for U.S. corn annually. They say U.S corn exports to the South American country in 2023 totaled more than $1.14 billion in sales.
The group cited a similar investigation launched by Colombia earlier this year into U.S. milk powder exports, which led to tariffs on U.S. sales of the products.
A total of 31 Republicans and 8 Democrats have signed the letter.
