Lessons from 2024
A southern Iowa-based LG Seeds agronomist says 2024 was a learning experience for many farmers in the upper Midwest.
Bryant Luers says crop conditions varied across the state.
“Poor root development, sidewall compaction, lower stands in certain instances and so that really led to a ton of variability when we went into harvest,” he says. “Now if you look at southwest Iowa, it’s a little bit of a different story. They didn’t get all the rains early on a lot better crops over in that neck of the woods.”
He tells Brownfield hybrid selection is the best defense for disease protection in 2025.
“Plant health was a huge discussion this year, especially around tar spot,” he says. “I mean, that’s something that’s kind of been continuing to be a problem going forward. It’s something that overwinters in our soil, so it’s not going anywhere.”
Luers says implementation of these lessons will help growers build resiliency to challenges in the future.
