The USDA’s Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs says the administration is taking the USMCA review process very seriously.

Luke Lindberg tells Brownfield, “The review process is a critical step. We intentionally built this in during the president’s first term so that we could address issues that would inevitably rise up.”

He says no trade agreement is perfect, and no agreement is lived up to by all parties.

“It gives us a chance to work on things like how Canada continues to take advantage of our dairy producers. Or, Mexico has played games with our corn producers in the past.”

Lindberg says a strengthened deal with Mexico and Canada could help further increase grain exports.

“The agreement has resulted in new prosperity and new sales opportunities and real demand for American products, but there are areas in which we’re focused on making sure we hold our trading partners accountable.”

The USMCA will expire in 2036 and the scheduled review is set to begin July 1, 2026.
