Livestock economist expecting some contraction in January cattle inventory report

A livestock economist says he still expects to see some contraction in the January cattle inventory report.

Don Close, with Terrain Ag tells Brownfield there could be between 200,000 to 300,000 fewer cows.

“It will be a smaller inventory and it’s just further exacerbating where we’ve been for the last few years with that contracting supply,” he says.

He says a prolonged period of good weather is needed before any widespread expansion could occur.

“I think before this whole rally is over with, that we’re going to put a carrot out there in the marketplace that’s so doggone big that they will respond. We’re just not there yet,” he says.
